(Better Late Than Never) Photos from Art Basel Miami Beach

No, I haven't posted here in over a month. That's crazy. I've been ridiculously busy. For those of you that know me, you know how busy that actually is.

Also, Art Basel was last month, so, yes, it took a while for me to get these photos up on the web. There are a lot of photos though, so it's probably worth it.

Check out the full set on flickr.

Here are some highlights:

Movies 2010 #12 Exit Through the Gift Shop

After watching this, I'm not sure if we've won or lost.

I mean, by most measures the careers of just Banksy and Shepard Fairey alone are enough to signal that street art has "made it," so at some level we've definitely won. Anyone who was searching for legitimacy from the art world has found it. The question then becomes, what do we lose to gain legitimacy? That's what I walked away wrestling with after seeing Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Graffiti Beef Makes News in the UK (And Not Because of Violence) Banksy vs. Robbo

Banksy in graffiti war with fellow street artist after painting over 24-year-old mural

You aerosol

Long story short- Banksy went over a 24 year old piece and was gone over in response.

I'm saddened by the loss of the original piece and I didn't even know the work in question. If I'd grown up seeing a survivor like that (Bostonians- imagine the SAINT piece in the South End.) I'd be positively heartbroken to see it gone over. It's a clever gag, but any piece of graffiti that old is rare. Even tags that old are rare. Pieces that old? They don't exist. That's a damn shame.

Banksy in NYC

I hope all my NYC people are going to make it over there to check it out.

As a side note, the cover story this month in ArtNews is about Street Art. Cool.
