10 for 10: Top Ten Comics of the Decade

Over at my comics blog, I did a 10 for 10 post about comics. You should really check it out.

The focus here is on American mainstream comics. I have no apologies for that :) These are in no order. They are, however, presented with plenty of love for a decade chock full of good comics.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Sleeper

Comprising Sleeper: Season One and Sleeper: Season Two, this series went way too far under the radar. It was clearly one of the best superhero efforts of the decade, although at the end of the day it was more cloak and dagger than capes and cowls. Thankfully both Phillips and Brubaker went on to become fancy, big-selling stars for Marvel after finishing up this classic. I just wish a few more people had been able to check out Sleeper when it was running. It was tough talking into a vacuum.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal

Criminal took the Noir aspects of Sleeper, jettisoned the superhero aspects and distilled a pure drauft of crime drama. I have an affinity for their source material and love these two guys as individual talents so I was basically made to love this book.

10 for 10: Top Ten Albums

10 for 10

My list is a little different than the rest of the lists you might be seeing floating around the net these days as it starts with the launch of this site (which occurred a few months before the clock ticked over) and not 1/1/2000. It overlaps enough that it seems like it makes sense to launch this one right now. Especially since my entire list actually falls within the middle of this decade.

10. Arcade Fire: Funeral

While I probably like individual songs on Neon Bible more than anything on this record, the seamless whole here puts it over the top. And that's not to say the individual songs on Funeral are anything to sneeze at. For proof pick any song called Neighborhood (*) or the obvious movie trailer fueling Wake Up.

10 For 10: Ten Movies That Kicked My Ass Over the Past Decade

10-for-10

My site is celebrating 10 glorious years on the internet and to honor that I'm going to be tossing out a few top ten lists over the next few months. This movie themed list hearkens back to the very origins of this site.

Ten years ago Drunkenfist.com was mostly a repository of my writing for Boston's late, lamented Shovel Magazine. At that point I'd been writing 1-2000 words a month on Hong Kong movies for a couple of years, so there was a lot of content to share. Since then, the site has transitioned from mostly film writing to mostly art, but at its heart the site still has a lot of cinema flowing through its veins.

Because of that, it's only right that I start with this list of ten films released over the past ten years that fit the Drunkenfist.com aesthetic to a tee. If I were still Mr. Movies the following 10 films would have been trotted out at every opportunity. For those of you who followed my writing back in the day, imagine the geeking out I did over Iron Monkey and you'll get a clear picture of how much I like the following films…

So, without further ado, here are 10 movies that have kicked my ass over the past ten years (in one way or another :) )
