I can't wait to see how well this actually works:

"One of the challenges when troubleshooting web pages is finding exactly where in the style hierarchy that font size has been set. With this version of the IE Developer toolbar we can now right click on the current style being displayed and select “Trace Style” which will then bring up the window in the screenshot below with the source of the style sheet and highlighting the rule that is in this case specifying that TD elements have a font size of 11px."

If it works well that will be a great feature as there are occasions on big projects where I just can't keep track of the entire cascade. I'll take a shot with it tomorrow maybe. I've been meaning to reinstall* IE7 anyway, so that might be a good excuse.

IEBlog : IE Developer Toolbar Beta 3 – Now Available

IE7, by the way? Still only accounts for 23% of the Internet Explorer visitors to drunkenfist.com. This transition is going to take forever…

*I had to uninstall it to use a fully functioning version of IE6 to test a site that used both conditional comments and the AlphaImageLoader PNG hack. I've got a Browsercam account at work now, so I don't really have to worry so much about having the full IE6 laying around.

Emptying the Web Junk Drawer of My Mind

Not much this time around as everyone is in hiding, apparently.

Shameless self promotion: New Project

I'm going to be doing some UI design and development for my old boss, PK Shiu's new project Kind Neighbor. I think we first talked about working on it a year and a half ago. Sometimes even the Internet doesn't move all that fast. Should be fun.

Emptying the web junk drawer of my mind

(all apologies to, I believe, Bob Ryan, for stealing the title of this post)

The new A List Apart article, Switchy McLayout: An Adaptive Layout Technique, got me thinking about methods to serve content to mobile browsers. To play around with that in a real world environment (without having to wait around for a client to ask) I started to think seriously about how I want to handle serving content for mobile browsers here at Drunkenfist.com. The above article is nice in concept (especially since it works on the other end of the spectrum), but it doesn't do anything to limit the overall file sizes (in fact I imagine it adds to the size of the style sheets) or how much/what type of content is sent to the browsers. What I really want is a low overhead scheme for serving proper mobile friendly pages.

IE6 and IE7 Running on a Single Machine: now even cooler?

I have the standalone version of IE6 running at work. That's fine for CSS rendering and Javascript. The big news is below should allow me to test both CSS filters (which rely on ActiveX) and conditional comments, both of which I use for a few things, including transparent PNG support. Very cool.

The IEBlog is a great resource, by the way. They present a lot of good info about what is, for better or for worse, the world's most popular web browser.

Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 Adoption Rates

A continuing series based on the google analytics numbers for DrunkenFist.com

Finally IE7 makes it to 10%. A month or two ago I probably would have been surprised that it took this long. Now, considering I still haven't gotten the automatic update at home or at work, I guess it's no surprise.
