Rod Stewart’s Model Railroad Set Appears on Cover of Model Railroader- Fulfills Lifelong Ambition

I’m posting this completely non-ironically. I think it’s massively cool that Rod Stewart, of all people, has created one of the “best train sets” the unnamed experts in the Daily Record article have ever seen.

I’m not an expert, but it looks pretty cool to me.

WinAMP 5.5 is a buggy piece of garbage

I’ve used WinAMP forever (since WinAMP 0.92- released a decade ago.) I installed the latest version today and it’s a complete piece of shit. It won’t even run on my (admittedly crappy) work machine. It tries to scan my “watch folders” at startup and hangs every time. EVERY TIME. What’s worse is it looks like it’s doing it based on the file name of an eMusic download. Which is funny since WinAMP pushed trial subscriptions to eMusic as part of the install.

Which leaves me with no music player I actually want to use installed on this machine.

What’s worse, with WinAMP completely useless and the fact that I don’t like iTunes (resource hog) or Windows Media Player I’m not even sure what other options I might have.

Thank god I found this old version of Winamp to replace this piece of garbage :)

An Excellent New Yorker Article on Joyce Hatto

Remember me mentioning Hattogate?, The New Yorker has an excellent article on the subject:

Letter from England: Fantasia for Piano: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker

I only got about halfway through, but I’ll return to it later tonight to finish it off. Good stuff.

The Bloc Party and Of Monteal tracks are live. The rest are studio versions. I know Of Montreal, Mason Jennings, and Coconut Records are all available on eMusic. maybe some of the others are too? I’ll have to research that. Jeremy Warmsley, I think, is only available as an import, although the Amazon price for it was very fair (Around $14, I think.)

Here’s the track list in HTML

  • Coconut Records- West Coast
  • Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
  • Of Montreal - Chrissy Kiss the Corpse
  • Joni Mitchell - The Circle Game
  • The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow
  • Jeremy Warmsley - 5 Verses
  • Mason Jennings - Sorry Signs on Cash Machines
  • Swizz Beats - It’s Me Bitches
  • Bloc Party - Waiting for the 7:18
  • Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster

Trapped in the Closet returns

I came to the party pretty late with the whole Trapped in the Closet thing, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the return of R. Kelly’s unbelievable “hip hopera”

IFC pulled of the coup of the year and they’re hosting the new chapters:

Trapped in the closet

If I weren’t supposed to be working tonight I’d go through the original episodes right now to get myself pumped up for the sequel. There are moments in the original that had me cackling like a madman.

Oh hell… I might just do it anyway.

I’m having a hard time deciding what the best moment is. It’s chock full of hilarity.

Sadly, the above link, which should cover all of 1-12 actually craps out about 20 seconds from the end. If you’ve just got to know the last line (although it is telegraphed), check out this standalone version from youtube for the last chapter.

Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia Live

Here’s another great song from the same era as “People Who Died.” This is a nut-punching live version with excellent video quality.

I can’t seem to stay off of youtube these days.

I’m coding up some more JSON examples as we speak, if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Jim Carroll Band - “People Who Died”

For my money this is one of the great songs of the 80s.

I can’t believe this song doesn’t have a proper Wikipedia entry.

Old Pogues Video- Streams of Whiskey

Sure, I have to work (both freelance and for my job), but there’s still going to be a serving or two of whiskey in my future. I’ll be humming this song while drinking it…

Yes, I’m on Youtube all the time now.

Not news to you maybe, but Jason Schwarztman + Mark Gonzales = cool

This video for Coconut Records (Jason Schwarztman) “West Coast” featuring the inimitable Mark Gonzales.

More on the background can be found here*: PAPERMAG: WORD UP!: Jason Schwartzman Mashes Mark Gonzales

*and probably elsewhere on the net, I’m too busy to fully research today.

[edited to add:] The album is on emusic. Saved for later.

Dear Internet- where can I hear Belle & Sebastian cover Another Girl, Another Planet?

I was poking around the wikipedia entry for The Only Ones’ Another Girl, Another Planet when I discovered that it had been covered by Belle & Sebastian. My head might explode with that knowledge. So… dear internet, please sir or madam, where might I find a copy? for sale? For download? For direct injection into my brain?

Much virtual love to whoever can hook me up.
