My To-Do List Is the Size Of and Is As Menacing As an Elder God

Something like this:

my to-do list is big and mean

Will I ever tame it? I'm thinking positive thoughts. Thing is, my last Subversion check-in was over three weeks ago, so I don't know how far positive vibes can really take me… what I really need to do is work on some of these things :)

The good news is, none of them are all that involved. The bad news is, I'm busy as hell at work and am addicted to Lost on DVD (nearly done with Season 2), so there's not a lot of time left in my day to hack at this site. Hopefully some time soon…

Back From NYC

AND I have new glasses. So expect some typing this week. Until then, here are a couple of photos:

Heading down to Brooklyn for the day. Going to see the © MURAKAMI at the Brooklyn Museum.

There's also an Os Gemeos opening at Deitch, so it could be a full-on "my style" art day.

As always I'll returns with dozens (or hundreds) of photos :)

Why Won't IE6 Die? AKA My View of Current Browser Usage

The following table outlines current browser usage across several sites for which I have analytics access. This represents the trailing 30 days, ending yesterday, 2008-06-25. While not a full cross section of the Internet there's a reasonable spread between the sites in terms of age and technology experience, so this sample should be reasonably interesting to those of you who care about such things. It's interesting enough for me to post about :)

IE 6 IE 7 Firefox (all ) Safari (all ) Other Total Visitors
Totals 15133 24739 20165 3102 2649 65788
Percentages 23% 38% 31% 5% 4%

As you can see, while it's now third, Internet Explorer 6 is still hanging on with unfortunate tenacity. Which means we still have great pain to deal with when trying to develop cross-browser web sites in this rich, interactive era.

I also means there's demand for people like me who know how to handle the beast, so I guess I should look to that as a silver lining…

Still, die IE6 die.

Some More Photos from An Event Apart Boston

Again, day two was interesting/entertaining. I can't recommend the AEA events enough. Well run, with top presenters and an action packed schedule An Event Apart Boston was well worth the money.

Sure, it wasn't my money, but still…

An Event Apart Boston Day #1

The first day of the show was a lot of fun. Interesting, entertaining and generally thought provoking the event was as good as I'd hoped. If pressed, I'd say Jared Spool and Luke Wroblewski had the best presentations, both were equal parts fun and informative, but picking any favorites out of such a strong bunch is really splitting hairs.

Let's just say I can't wait until tomorrow.

Just look at this contented face:

There was a lot of good information shared and a couple of ideas will see almost immediate action here on the site. Others will work their way into the DrunkenFist.com 10th anniversary redesign due July 19, 2009.

  • Yes, I just promised a redesign due thirteen months from now. Hold me to that, okay, gentle readers?
  • Yeah, this site really is going to be ten years old. That's twisted. It's awesome. But it's still twisted at the same time. The web still feels so new to me that the idea that I've had this one solid presence for so long is a little hard to reconcile.
  • Triple yes… it really will take me over a year to actually execute the redesign. While it won't be as complete an overhaul as the last one (focusing on visual design and UI enhancements) it's still going to be big enough, and I'm busy enough, that it should take me at least a few weeks of work to get done right. Since I never get "a few weeks" straight to work on my own stuff, thirteen months lead time looks like it might be enough time to piece together the hours I need to get this thing done right.

Movies 2008 #18 Paprika

Paprika

I hope the trajectory of Satoshi Kon's career continues on this upward swing, because my enjoyment of this work has been trending up with each of his projects, culminating with my unabashed admiration for the last two. Paprika, a full-length feature from 2006 and Paranoia Agent, a television series from 2004 both possess a unique, hallucinogenic vision and a fascinating examination of the nature of reality.

Paprika directly examines the line between the waking and dreaming worlds. Plot-wise, it's based on the use of a technology that allows users to share the perception of a collective dreamspace. The technology falls into the wrong hands (doesn't it always?) and the walls between the two begin to crumble, allowing the dreamworld to bleed into the real world. A race then ensues to bottle the dreamworld back up and save reality. All of this is told in a style that would make Alejandro Jodorowsky proud. While certainly not as creative as Jodo, it does share a similar, "what will happen next?" approach that I simply love. If you share my love of that hallucinogenic mind/eye candy style, then Paprika is definitely recommended.

What I Did Today…

I took one of Ellen Rolli's one day painting workshops. It was great to work in a totally different style for a day. Here's one of the four paintings I did during the five hour class:

What I Did Today.

I'll post a better image of this and my other paintings some time later on this weekend.

Time Flies? Something Like That. Rocketmail is "back."

Apparently, Yahoo! is resurrecting their Rocketmail.com domain name for freemail accounts. For this of you who don't know, Rocketmail was one of the the first free email services out there. Yahoo! purchased them all the way back in 1997. Which scares the hell out of me since I had a Rocketmail account and 1997 seems like an entire lifetime ago at this point (and in some senses it is since I've embarked on an entirely new career since that time.) Interestingly, my day-to-day Yahoo! account is actually that same converted Rocketmail account, a fact I'm reminded of often as my login has .rm appended to the end of my old Rocketmail username.

I wonder how many of those are still in operation?

Considering I'm a pro flickr user and use several other Yahoo! services I think I'm at least one user who has converted profitably from the Four11 purchase all those years ago.

Experienced surfers (that’s a nice way to say “old”) will recognize Rocketmail as one of the first free e-mail services around, acquired by Yahoo (along with its owner, Four11) back in 1997. Other than for nostalgic reasons, I doubt many surfers will run to register their name@rocketmail.com accounts; the domain name is a bit too long for today’s standards.

Ymail And Rocketmail? Sorry, Yahoo, But That’s Not Enough to Thwart Gmail

Promo Reel for Tony Jaa in Ong Bak II. The World is a Wonderful Place.

Jaa's stunt and fight work in the original Ong Bak is about as good as it gets outside of Hong Kong. While I was somewhat disappointed with his follow-up, Tom yum goong, the blend of different martial arts on view in this promo reel are enough to get me excited as all get out for this film.
