Hi, My Name is Rob, and I've Been Slashdotted

In case you were wondering why the site went down, I'm currently hanging out on the front page of slashdot.

I'll have a full traffic report up tomorrow. Preliminarily, it looks like the second biggest traffic day ever here- which is crazy since the other major traffic event didn't knock the site out of commission like this one did. I've now witnessed firsthand Slashdot's l33t site killing power :)

    Hey, thanks.

I'm holding out now. I got knocked offline pretty quickly, the initial traffic spike is intense, but I was able to move the targeted page out of Wordpress and into a static file. The server should be able to serve that all day with no worries.

It's pretty crazy. I've gotten something like 4-5 days worth of traffic in less than 20 hours. And that doesn't include an hour of requests that either were 403′d or returned an error 500, while I was trying to get things under control.

    Hi,

Since I doubt commenting would exactly work on the original Acid3 post, I'll note that while Acid3 may well crash the version of Konqueror in KDE 3, it doesn't crash the version in KDE 4.0.0 or later. The svn trunk version gets to about 47/100, hangs for several seconds, then continues up to 63/100. (It also displays a "linktest failed" message, but little else interesting rendering-wise AFAICT - there's no reference rendering for the progress animation.) I think 4.0.0 is in the same general ballpark.

Actually, the comments work, they just don't show up yet since I'm serving a static page…

I actually have screen shots of a patched Konqueror (and IE8 beta 1) waiting to be put up- once things calm down a little on the traffic side (I'm thinking later this afternoon or tonight.) I just want to make sure I don't get any more big spikes (I'm looking at you Digg) before I turn the post back into a post.

Also, if you what exactly it looks like in a recent version of Konqueror, there's a screenshot at http://www.makomk.com/~aidan/konq4_acid3.png It's fairly boring, though - it doesn't exactly mangle the page in any interesting ways.
