Remember- you saw it here first:

Apparently, Coconut Records’ “West Coast” is featured in Cloverfield. Regulars here will remember that I pointed out the phenomenal (to me at least) video for West Coast back in the summer.

Not news to you maybe, but Jason Schwarztman + Mark Gonzales = cool

I ended up buying the record off of eMusic recently and I really, really enjoy it. West Coast is painfully infectious (according to last.fm, it’s the #3 track for me over the past year- trailing only Neutral Milk Hotel’s Holland, 1945 and The Only Ones, Another Girl Another Planet) and the new single, Nighttiming, is getting some well-deserved play on WERS.

Actor Heath Ledger Found Dead

Holy shit.

Bummer.

I mean that. I wasn’t even that much of a fan, but he was an obvious talent on the rise and it’s always sad to see someone on that trajectory snuffed out before they get a chance to really shine.

Also, thinking about it, he’s set to star in the newest Batman film as the Joker. Considering how much I enjoyed the first film, how cool he looked in the role and how talented I know him to be I’m thinking I would have been a much bigger fan of his come summer. Now? There’ll be a strange, bittersweet twinge to the experience when I sit down to see The Dark Knight. Kind of like seeing The Crow in the theater when it came out- great fun, but definitely a hint of melancholy to the whole event.

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.

An excellent XKCD

Maybe not the funniest, but this one makes me say “fuck yeah”

Spam assault

I’ve had thousands of email correspondents over the years so on occasion a zombified machine or two used to send spam finds my domain in the compromised machine’s address book and creates fake email addresses pointing back here. In those situations, I can get hundreds of “Undelivered mail return to sender” type messages whereever the spammer fails to find a proper address. Over the past couple of days I’ve been slammed with them (a hundred here, a hundred there) and in the past ten minutes I’ve gotten over 2000 and counting. They’re filtered into the trash on my machine, but it’s still crazy to see that big of a spam assault happen in something like real time.

Movies 2008 #4 Century of the Dragon

Century of the Dragon Wong Jing’s career encompasses the entirety of cinematic experience and I love the guy for it. He’s been at this for decades now and over his years he’s produced great films, sleazy films and plainly bad films in every conceivable genre and style (oftentimes in multiple genres at once.)

Unfortunately, this film, which he only produced, falls smack dab in the middle of that range- it’s so-so quality wise, it isn’t nearly as sleazy or exploitative as it could have been and it’s only mindless action packed for short bursts. Maybe if he’d done the full auteur treatment on this one it would have hit a few more high notes.

As it is, it was a fine way to spend a couple of hours. Why? I pretty much never get tired of triad dramas, even half-assed ones.

Digging this approach

I’m still not fully sold on the actual letters, but I really do like this general idea:
