Hopping Vampires, Taoist Priests… Yes. Yes. If you've got the chance, curl up today with some classic Hong Kong supernatural hijinks. Here's some Youtube goodness to whet your whistle:
The Final Battle From Sammo Hung's Spooky Encounters 2
Sammo was a real trend-setter in this area. This is finale from the sequel to his original Encounters of the Spooky Kind/Spooky Encounters.
The Mr. Vampire Trailer
Lam Ching Ying is the classic Taoist Priest/Vampire Killer in this beloved series of films.
The First Five or so Minutes of A Chinese Ghost Story
Rent it now if you've never seen it and just pick up where this bit leaves off…
Shaolin vs. Evil Dead Trailer
I haven't actually seen this yet. Shame on me.
and what the hell
The "Daoist Rap" from A Chinese Ghost Story
I love MySpace. I really do.
I can't count the number of people I've gotten messages or friend requests from that I haven't seen or spoken to in 10,12,15 years.
Here's a perfect example. My old boss from Superhero Universe is living in Nashville and has a myspace music profile: Geoff Clarke
Cool stuff.
Kon (BWS) and Amir eMusic's Taster’s Choice
Check out the owner of one of Boston's all-time great hand styles profiled on eMusic:
eMusic Spotlight - Taster’s Choice: Gilles Peterson and Kon and Amir
There is no lone American equivalent to Peterson’s multi-platform reach, but the East Coast DJ duo of Kon and Amir probably come close in terms of record collections. They first became
known for their On Track tapes throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, hip-hop-influenced mixes of little-known singles and breakbeats and recently discovered samples that entranced generations of record collectors. They recently put out Off Track, a three-hour mix of their best gems, including Quest’s highly sought-after disco cut “Boy Scouts” — it pays soaring tribute to the Boy Scouts of America, and must be heard to be believed — Le Stim’s pepped-up, percussive “Tribute to Muhammad Ali” and Jacqueline Dee and Johnnie Wal’s charmingly titled “Farewell to Welfare.” When even the tracklisting looks cool, that’s when you know you have untouchable taste.
Please, Boston Red Sox, Re-sign Mike Lowell! Ignore A-Fraud.
Let some other team take him and his empty numbers.
While I'm happy as hell that they won last night
I've got the ph34r in me that they will be tempted by the gaudy numbers of one Alex Rodriguez.
Red Stockings, please don't buy into it.
Please!
Just re-sign Mike Lowell and let the can't win*, stat hound, baby go play somewhere else. Seriously! Who would you rather have, a guy whose biggest playoff moment is slapping a ball out of Bronson Arroyo's hand out of spite because he failed to do anything with his bat or a World Series MVP like Mike Lowell? I swear to god I will take the next couple of summers off if they sign A-Rod. I'm serious. I can do it now that they've won a couple of times. I've got cycling to watch for a sporting fix and I can just enjoy the outdoors a little more. I'd rather have that than to sit through them pandering to the bloated stats of the heartless wonder. What did he do down the stretch? 1-infinity? He was mad cold when it counted. Theo, keep that in mind when you look at those fancy numbers.
Fuck that guy.
Buster Olney knows:
The way this played out could not have been more apropos, because A-Rod needs to be bigger than the game; he needs to be more important than the Red Sox or the Rockies or any other team, or any other player. He is one of the greatest players in history at compiling statistics, the greatest ever at compiling wealth, and his next employer will have to buy into that. The World Series can't matter as much as A-Rod.
…
Somebody will buy into A-Rod, of course. He's an extraordinary player. The cost will be hundreds of millions, and the heart and soul, of his next franchise.
A-Rod upstages the World Series
*Lowell has two rings.
Starting today- Da Vinci's Last Supper at 16 Billion Pixels
I've never seen The Last Supper in the flesh, so this will have to do for now.
Actually, come to think of it, I don't even know where The Last Supper is…
Ah… it's in Milan. Well, if I ever go to the finish of the Giro d'Italia, then I'll pop in and check it out.
PageRank 5
My blog now has PageRank 5. It actually has been at that level for several months (or so I assumed based on Google's Webmaster Tools) but there was just a toolbar update so the big jump from 4 to 5 was only reflected in the toolbar data today. Wicked.
